Research Spotlight

The Children’s Heart Foundation was an early and repeated supporter of Sunjay Kaushal, MD, PhD, Division Head of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. His leading-edge research, funded by The Children's Heart Foundation, entitled "Stem Cell Therapy for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome Patients" has led to 4 NIH grants, totaling $8.4 million, evaluating the safety and feasibility of using stem cell therapy to improve the function of single ventricle hearts.

Not only is Dr. Kaushal currently leading the multi-institutional randomized clinical trial of stem cell therapy in infants with HLHS, but over 30 peer review manuscripts have been published in leading journals, including circulation and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery!
