Underrepresented Minority in Medicine (URM) Research Training Award

We believe increasing diversity and addressing health disparities in CHD research is integral to achieving our mission of helping all patients impacted by CHDs live longer, healthier lives. Our inaugural URM Training Award aims to partially offset the cost for underrepresented minorities in medicine (URM) to obtain formal training in research methods via a Masters (e.g., MPH, MSCI) or PhD program to facilitate a career in translational or clinical research in congenital heart disease. 

Award:

One $10,000 URM Training award may be granted in 2024. Funds will be sent directly to the awardee’s degree program (balance of degree program to be paid by awardee’s division/department).

Timeline:

  • Open Applications: March 29, 2024
  • Submission Deadline: July 19, 2024
  • Decision Notifications: August 9, 2024

Eligibility Requirements: 

Applicants must meet criteria #1 or #2 AND #3

  1. Categorical pediatric cardiology fellow in an ACGME approved program in the United States (or North America), or a fourth-year fellow who has recently completed such a categorical fellowship.
  2. Pediatric cardiologist, board-certified ACHD cardiologist, or pediatric cardiac surgeon at the assistant or associate professor level.
  3. Must be an underrepresented minority in medicine by the standard NIH definition: Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.

  • Letter of interest, including career interests, research accomplishments to date, career development plan, and summary of research environment (2 pages max)
  • CV
  • Letter of support from Division Head and/or Department Chair, including a commitment for funding the balance of the Masters or PhD program and providing time

Evaluation Criteria:

Applications will be scored by a panel of Medical Advisory Committee members and lay reviewers based on mission alignment, career interests and development plan, research activity to date, and research environment.
