January 10, 2022 – The winner of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2021 Pediatric Cardiology Research Fellowship Award, funded by The Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF), has been announced.
Mohammad Al-Mousily, M.D., Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at Medical University of South Carolina, will receive the award, which is made possible by a $35,000 educational grant from The Children’s Heart Foundation, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to funding congenital heart defect (CHD) research. The award provides research support for an individual who has demonstrated aptitude for basic science or clinical science research during their pediatric cardiology fellowship.
Al-Mousily’s research, titled, “The use of a 12 lead ECG and artificial intelligence with a machine learning model to identify structural heart disease”, aims to use artificial intelligence with ECGs to quickly identify children with structural heart disease. If successful, this will identify patients with structural heart disease sooner, improve access to care, improve outcomes, and decrease cost.
“The creation of a database of pediatric ECGs from normal patients as well as those with structural heart disease can allow for the development of learning models that can assist clinicians in identifying patients with critical congenital heart disease using the low-cost, widely available ECG,” Al-Mousily explains. “This will also build the framework that will allow for improved automated interpretations of pediatric ECGs and a database for further research.”
Congenital heart defects are America’s most common birth defect, occurring in 1 out of every 110 births. CHF and AAP have joined together to promote understanding of cardiovascular disease in children through this award, which represents a tremendous opportunity for junior faculty in pediatric cardiology to gain research experience.
