This proposal aims to study the role of an important protein known to occur in early embryos, called fibroblast growth factor, which appears to induce a change in early embryo heart cells that stimulates their growth and their differentiation as cardiac muscle cells. This study seeks to unveil critical landmarks and control mechanisms in the early developing heart, which may be abnormal in embryos destined to have serious forms of congenital heart disease. The study will be performed in embryonic cells harvested from a mouse model.
